What is the format of the PE Civil exam?

Each PE Civil module is a computer-based exam you can take year-round, choosing from Construction, Geotechnical, Structural, Transportation, or Water Resources and Environmental. The exam has 80 questions, all of which you work, inside a 9-hour appointment: 2 minutes for the nondisclosure agreement, 8 minutes for the tutorial, 8 hours for the exam, and a 50-minute scheduled break. These specifications take effect beginning April 2024.

What is included in the 9-hour appointment?

The appointment has four parts, and PE Environmental uses the same four parts: 2 minutes for the nondisclosure agreement, 8 minutes for the tutorial, 480 minutes (8 hours) for the exam, and 50 minutes for the scheduled break. Added together, these parts make the 9-hour appointment.

Part Time
Nondisclosure agreement 2 minutes
Tutorial 8 minutes
Exam 480 minutes (8 hours)
Scheduled break 50 minutes
Full appointment 9 hours

The nondisclosure agreement, tutorial, and scheduled break are separate from the 480 minutes you spend answering the 80 exam questions, though the break still counts toward the 9-hour total. One way to pace the exam is to split it in half: 4 hours for about 40 questions, then 4 hours for about 40 questions.

What are the five PE Civil exams?

You take one module per appointment: Construction, Geotechnical, Structural, Transportation, or Water Resources and Environmental. Choose the one that matches the civil work you do, since each module has its own specification and its own list of design standards. Compare which PE Civil exam to take before you register, then build your topic list from the full specification, because you are expected to work every question on that exam.

NCEES has posted PE Civil specifications effective beginning April 2027. The knowledge areas and question ranges match the April 2024 specifications, and the update affects only the design standards. Read what changes in the PE Civil design standards in April 2027 and study the editions that apply to your appointment date.

Which references are allowed on PE Civil?

The specifications describe a closed book exam with electronic references: the PE Civil Reference Handbook and the design standards listed for your module. What references you can use on the PE exam lays out how NCEES supplies them, and both the handbook and the standards stay available for the whole exam.

The handbook is version 2.2, with the third posting of that PDF dated December 2025 and running 502 pages. On the exam, design standards appear as searchable PDF chapters, but only one chapter can be open and searched at a time, so you need to open the chapter that holds the table you need before you can search a different one.

When a question references a standard, scoring uses the edition listed in the specifications, and answers based on other standards get no credit. If your date falls under the April 2027 specifications, prepare with the editions named in that posting.

What question types and units does PE Civil use?

Most questions are multiple choice with one correct answer. NCEES also uses alternative item types:

  • multiple correct
  • point and click
  • drag and drop
  • fill in the blank

The exam uses both SI and U.S. Customary units, so work each problem in the system it is written in. These alternative item types are part of the same 80-question exam you work in full, so attempt every item.

How much time is there per question?

Eight hours for 80 questions averages to 6 minutes per question across the whole exam. A short multiple choice item can finish under that average, while an item that depends on a design standard can run longer, so time you spend past 6 minutes on one item has to come back on a later item if you want to reach all 80 inside the 8 hours.

Practice at this 6-minute average until it feels ordinary, and note which item types run long so you already know them on exam day. A 12-week PE study plan is one way to put that timed work on a calendar.

What is the fee, and how often can you retake?

The PE exam fee is $400 per attempt, paid to NCEES, though PE Structural is priced per section. See how much the PE exam costs for how that fee fits a first attempt and a later one.

NCEES policy allows one attempt at a given exam per testing window and no more than three attempts in any 12-month period, though some boards are stricter. Read PE results and retake rules for the NCEES policy.

Frequently asked questions

How many questions are on the PE Civil exam?

Each of the five PE Civil modules, Construction, Geotechnical, Structural, Transportation, and Water Resources and Environmental, has 80 questions, and you work all of them on the module you choose. Most questions are multiple choice with one correct answer, and NCEES also uses multiple correct, point and click, drag and drop, and fill in the blank items.

Is the PE Civil exam open book?

No. PE Civil is closed book, with electronic references supplied on the computer: the PE Civil Reference Handbook (version 2.2, a 502-page PDF) and the design standards for your module. Only one design-standard chapter can be open and searched at a time, and questions that reference a standard are scored on the edition listed in the specifications.

Is the PE Civil exam still breadth and depth?

No. Specifications effective beginning April 2024 make each PE Civil exam a single 80-question test in one module, with examinees working all the questions. Construction, Geotechnical, Structural, Transportation, and Water Resources and Environmental are five separate exams under that format, and specifications effective beginning April 2027 keep the same knowledge areas and question ranges while updating the design standards.

How long is the PE Civil exam?

Exam time is 8 hours, set inside a 9-hour appointment that also includes a 2-minute nondisclosure agreement, an 8-minute tutorial, and a 50-minute scheduled break, for parts of 2, 8, 480, and 50 minutes. Eight hours divided by 80 questions averages to 6 minutes per question.
