How many times can you take the FE exam?

NCEES lets you take the FE exam once in each testing window and at most three times in any 12-month period. The four year-round windows are January to March, April to June, July to September, and October to December, so you can use at most three of them in any 12-month stretch. Some licensing boards set a tighter limit, and every attempt costs the full $225 fee paid to NCEES.

What the attempt limits mean in practice

You get one attempt inside a testing window, used as soon as you test, and the next window is the earliest you can sit again. That window is open only when the new attempt would still be one of three in the past 12 months.

If you test in three consecutive windows, the next window still falls inside the same 12-month stretch, so you skip it. You can register again once the oldest of those three attempts sits outside the 12 months. The same cap applies if the three attempts were not consecutive, since any FE attempt whose date is still inside the 12 months before the new test date counts toward the limit.

When FE exam results come out tells you whether a retake is required. How you register for the FE exam is the path into the next open window once your licensing board still lists you as eligible.

When your licensing board is stricter

NCEES sets the one-attempt window rule and the cap of three attempts in any 12-month period, but some boards are stricter. When your board’s limit is tighter than the NCEES cap, that stricter rule is the one written on your board’s examination page.

What you pay to retake the FE exam

Every registration costs $225, paid directly to NCEES, and a retake is a new registration, so the full fee is due again. How much the FE exam costs stays the same figure on a later attempt as on the first.

The fee and the attempt cap are separate: you still need to be inside three attempts in any 12-month period, and inside your board’s rule if the board is stricter, before that payment is for a seat you are allowed to use.

How to use the diagnostic report on a retake

For each knowledge area, the diagnostic report gives a scaled score from 0 to 15 and sets it beside the average of examinees who passed. Start with the knowledge areas farthest below that average, and keep a lighter review where you already sit near the average, since a small gap is a weaker signal than a large one.

You cannot turn the report into a passing score or a count of right answers. NCEES leaves the passing score unpublished because that score moves slightly when form difficulty moves. Read how the FE exam is scored for the rules behind the 0 to 15 scale.

One way to use the weeks before your next eligible window is to put most of your study time on the lowest knowledge areas, then mix in problems from other areas so the stronger ones stay fresh. When the coming window is open to you, the approach in a short study plan for that gap is a workable split. Use mistakes that cost points on the FE exam as a checklist while you correct the low areas.

Repeat takers face the same standard

NCEES uses one grading standard for first-time takers and for people taking the exam again, and it sets no quota of examinees who should pass or fail. A later attempt is judged on that same standard.

Year-round CBT exams are built with a linear-on-the-fly (LOFT) algorithm. Each examinee receives an equal number of questions on each topic and a form of the same relative difficulty, so the form changes from person to person while the relative difficulty stays the same.

Frequently asked questions

How soon can I retake the FE exam?

The soonest retake is the next testing window after the one you already used, if that new attempt stays within three attempts in any 12-month period. The windows are January to March, April to June, July to September, and October to December, and you get one attempt in a window you are allowed to use. If three attempts already fall inside the last 12 months, you wait until the oldest of them is outside that period.

Is there a lifetime limit on FE attempts?

NCEES policy limits you to one attempt per testing window and to three attempts in any 12-month period. A lifetime maximum is not part of those two limits, though some boards are stricter and can set their own cap on attempts.

Do I pay again to retake the FE?

Yes. Every registration requires the full exam fee again, and you pay $225 directly to NCEES when you register for the retake.

Is the retake harder?

Repeat takers are graded to the same standard as first-time takers. Under the linear-on-the-fly algorithm, every examinee gets an equal number of questions per topic and the same relative difficulty, while the question set changes from person to person. NCEES sets no quota of examinees who should pass or fail, and the passing score stays unpublished because it varies slightly with difficulty, so the retake uses that same standard.
